There are many dog breeds well-suited to life in a small home. Many apartment complexes in Orange County require a dog to be within the 20- to 25-pound range. It is more difficult to find rental units that will accept a large dog breed. Most management groups also require a damage deposit of $100 to $500.
There are three types of dog breeds that do not belong in an apartment or condo community: barkers, high-energy dogs and aggressive dogs. It is not fair to the other residents or to the dogs to put them in this type of situation.

Regardless of their size, all dog breeds require exercise. Tiny toy breeds can get by with a single walk per day, but most dogs need to be walked twice a day. Dogs who do not get their daily walks are more likely to display behavior problems. Training is key for all dog breeds. Given several daily walks, stimulating toys and lots of love, dogs can be great companions for those who live in small homes. Make your choice based on the time and energy you can devote, and you will have a faithful friend to come home to.

The American Kennel Club (AKC) has recognized three new dog breeds this year, and this move is likely to increase the popularity of these breeds. The designation also allows these three new breeds to be entered into championships at the club's competitions.
It is not easy to get a new breed officially recognised by the AKC, but since starting in 1884 with nine recognised breeds, the AKC's list has gradually grown to 170. Breeders, owners and experts must first create their own club to promote a new breed before they can apply for recognition. Even then they must meet a number of criteria, based on popularity and generational pedigrees, with the entire process taking years. Recognition doesn't necessarily mean higher prices for these breeds, but it does offer more quality assurance.
