Mediterranean variety of small dogs

Among small dog breed or miniature dog breeds of the world the Maltese dog variety originated in Malta in ancient times, mentioned by Aristotle in 4th century B.C. Coat of a good length, straight and silky, not wooly; pure white, with slight lemon markings permitted. Head: skull and muzzle lengths equal; definite stop; nose pure black; eyes dark brown, oval; long well feathered ears; scissor bite. Body: well balanced, short and cobby, with well sprung ribs and straight back. Height: not over 10 inches. Tail: well arched over back; feathered. Influence: probable ancestor of all 'bichon' toy dogs.
Bichon Frise originated in France, possibly from the Barbet and the Maltese. Coat: fine and silky, with soft corkscrew curls; pure white. Head: skull longer than muzzle; cheeks flat; slight stop; eyes dark with dark rims; ears narrow and delicate; scissor bite. Body: deep brisket; broad, well muscled loins; croup slightly rounded; small feet. Height: less than 12inches, Tail: carried over back, never tightly curled.
